We find that we can practice honesty to the degree that we can accept our limitations. When we cannot accept our limitations, we automatically lie in order to inflate ourselves and our accomplishments. For recovering alcoholics and addicts, nothing could be more insidious than such habits of self-inflation. When we lie about ourselves, we feel uneasy. And when we feel uneasy, we begin to set ourselves up for another mood-altering drink or drug.
