Activities included poetry readings, song, debate, lectures, readings, declarations, and socials both within and between the two societies. Meetings took place every Saturday evening. In the early years faculty served as presidents of the societies and they changed on a regular basis. Later, students would serve as president. Faculty members Thomas Metcalf and John Cook both served as president during Sarah Raymond’s time with the society. Raymond would have been exposed to a range of ideas in a coeducational environment as a member and she gained leadership experience.

Raymond in the community by that time that “The schools have been ordered to be closed today at noon by Mr. E. ” Catherine Raymond died of cancer after a lingering illness of five years at the age of sixty-seven just short of her fiftieth wedding anniversary. 35 He was seventy at the time of his death and had been ill for about one year.
