As a more contemporary example, physicists who postulate string theory as a means of bringing together relativity theory and quantum mechanics would be seen by the logical positivists as engaging in nonsense because, at the moment, there is no way that strings can be directly observed (Greene, 1999). Yet, few physicists would agree with this classification. The logical positivists suggested that theory should be axiomatized, that is, presented in the form of logical propositions that are taken to be true.

34) Quite clearly, the problems that troubled Popper were bothersome to some others even centuries earlier. Popper’s approach to science and that of the logical positivists are quite different in suggesting how science should be conducted. If one is interested in confirming inductive inferences by the collection of more and more data, then the scientist should engage in the careful and painstaking accumulation of individual instances. However, this is not the way science should be conducted, according to Popper.

Israel. Green noted that the consensus on various aspects of operationism among the participants in the symposium was sparse. Summing up the views of the participants, Green concluded, “It is clear . . that the adoption of operationism had not, as per its early promise, led to the rise of a united scientific psychology” (p. 308). One of the basic disagreements between Bridgeman’s conception of operationism and that adopted by many psychologists, such as Boring, Hull, and Tolman, concerned the type of concepts to which operationism was relevant.
