Farrow lowered the gun, apathetically curious, as the automobile came nearer his cottage. He recognized the car as one rentable at the agency in Nairobi, which meant the driver was a European, the generic term in the colony for any white. The driver's head poked out. Within the hood of a rain cape was a round white face with an embalmed look.

He locked his arm around her waist and walked her down the hall to the back stairs. In the hall he discovered her other slipper and fitted it on her. He got her down to the hotel garage and into the Lincoln without encountering anyone but the garage attendant. The attendant, a yellow-faced Negro, glanced away from the girl quickly.
