Here’s a model: CASE STUDY OF THE IMPLEMENTATION PROCESS AND WHAT WAS LEARNED The group counseling program began the summer before school opened in September when the school counselor who was to lead the program attended a training program at the Hazelden Institute in Centre City, Minnesota. Hazelden Institute is world-famous, offering rehabilitation for drug, tobacco, and alcohol addiction and training programs for professionals in education, medicine, psychology, religion, and social service.

Counselors need to avoid playing it safe, being office-bound, and assuming the suggestions in a professional article about group themes are the only way to go. The key to a group’s success lies in counselors finding out what’s on the minds and in the hearts and souls of the students who are walking right by him down the school hallways. Sometimes the hardest lesson for aspiring group counselors to learn is that the role involves aggressive face-to-face recruiting and invitations that get the attention of students who are in need but resistant to being involved in counseling.

However, sometimes teens who have high-achieving parents with over-the-top expectations for their children are more at risk than their less successful peers. They tend to not act out in school and cause trouble. Therefore it is often difficult for them to seek help, as they are viewed as teens having it all with no problems. Even in today’s positive view of counseling, seeking help is often viewed as a weakness by the parents of the best and brightest students and the students themselves. Many see the process of getting help as a crack in their veneer of greatness.
