Despite being a newlywed man with a full-time and a parttime job, Watterson was quite prolific during this period. Though West couldn’t remember all of the many side projects Watterson undertook, he implied that Watterson generated a fair amount of miscellany during that time. The diverse nature of the projects Watterson participated in allowed him to flex his creative muscles and hone his cartooning skills. Two projects West does recall are a T-shirt Watterson designed for an environmental event in suburban Cleveland and a 1982 calendar, Judy Ernest’s Single-handed Survival Calendar.

Things were already looking up for him in that department. His final year at Chagrin Falls High, he submitted an editorial cartoon to the local Sun Herald newspaper, which, much to his astonishment and delight, they published. Not only that, but the editors liked the work so much that they encouraged Watterson to continue submitting cartoons, an unprecedented accomplishment for a high-school student. In that spring of 1976, Watterson drew a lighthearted cartoon for his fellow seniors to immortalize their upcoming graduation.

Looking back on these [strips] is really embarrassing. ” He also tried developing another strip called Critters, which centered on small bug-like creatures, as well as another about a young person’s first job and apartment. These, too, were flops with the syndicates. Years later, Watterson published a single panel from Critters in one of his collections, but none of these other early strips ever made their way into the public domain. Though this deluge of rejection may have deterred meeker souls, Watterson kept plugging away.
