I eagerly accepted his offer and thanked him immensely for everything. When I arrived home with my family back in Dresden, I discovered I was a celebrity of sorts myself. The hometown folks had seen a lot of photographs of Elvis and I together in the Army. The local weekly newspaper, the Dresden Enterprise, had been running articles about my being drafted and stationed with Elvis, and reported that we had become Army buddies. Everybody wanted to know the skinny on Elvis, and frankly their curiosity left me drained.

Each of us had to understand and know how to perform the four jobs on the tank until they became second nature. Everyone had the opportunity to drive the tanks and learn all about the big V-I2 Chrysler engines. We trained in driving these tanks until it was like driving our own car. Next, everyone had to learn about the different kinds of ammunitions carried on the tanks and how to fire the guns. Each tank had an allotted amount of ammo rounds for the various guns which included the main 9o-mm gun, the 5o-caliber, and the two 3o-caliber machine guns.

It was a scene in the movies. Our own private harem! The action was hard to believe and, again, second choice seemed like filet mignon to me. I had my pick of all but one of all these gorgeous women. I was having the time of my life, I thought, and I did not think there was anything wrong with how I was behaving. I only thought I was sowing my wild oats in a way I never dreamed possible before that time. Did I think these girls liked me for myself, or just because I was with Elvis? When you're in that situation, you don't even ask that question.
