The tow planes approached Gran Sasso from the southwest, passing near L’Aquila, where they ran into strong gusts of wind and heavy cloud cover.

This was also a very rough landing and Menzel broke his ankle just after exiting his glider. Radl slowly got the men out of the glider, but they were badly shaken up and also uncertain what to do next. Indeed, the SS men were pretty useless in the opening moments of the glider assault, due to a combination of lack of training for this role and airsickness. Inside the hotel, Tenente Faiola had been alerted to the glider landings by the shouting polizia and, after telling several men to secure the entrance, he ran upstairs to the third floor to ask Gueli for instructions.
