What did you do with the money you earned? My mother made me save a good part of it. At what jobs did you work at during high school? 2 Education and Professional Endeavors 23 RA: Oh, I had all kinds of jobs. I set type at a printing company after school. But for the last two years in high school I not only delivered papers from four to six in the morning, but on weekends I would work from three in the afternoon on Friday until midnight and then from noon of Saturday until two to three in the morning on Sunday and would get almost a week’s pay that way.

How did you light the house? We only had oil lamps for every room. We had to be awfully careful about fire, of course. But that was the standard method, at that time, of illumination. Do you mean that you had no electricity in your home for much of your childhood? That’s right. It was a great event when gaslight was available. Tell me about your Christmases. My mother did everything possible to make them very pleasant. I always was given the assignment of finding a Christmas tree. I would ride my bike out into the endless forest, not too far from our home, find a tree some place.

And she had all eight grades in one room. So she had quite a lot of experience in teaching everything in grammar school. I became enamored.
