We had another friend, Peter Adams, who was half Norwegian. He played guitar, [and was] also a captain. '19 Although several of Ian's colleagues in the officers' mess were aware of his interest in jazz in general and playing the trumpet in particular, his commanding officer, the colonel of the regiment, was unaware of this decadent obsession. 'We had the brigadier for a ceremonial dinner one night,' laughs Ian, 'and the regimental band played behind screens. Nice tunes from the musicals. At the end of the meal the custom was to walk out of the door, walk round to the other door, and languidly stand there listening to the band, looking at it, from the other side of the room.

And you can't buy that. That's really important. '12 During his last weeks in the army, Ian had acquired a trumpet from a fellow soldier, and begun practising again. Consequently in Nice, with his £15 Boosey and Hawkes instrument in hand, he soon hooked up with a pianist in the city who'd previously worked with Chet Baker. Together, they jammed regularly, and ended up playing quite a lot of 34 out of the long dark sessions. There, and later in Italy during the final stage of his travels, Ian attempted quite complex music, learning all the time.

And so we saw that. '12 Having graduated and then taken an extra year to qualify as a teacher, Ian was rudely jolted out of the Bohemian life he had espoused as a student when he was called up for his National Service in September 1956. Looking back on it, Ian is sure that this was entirely beneficial to him. '13 Whether it was the army's talent for spotting potential leaders, or simply its insistence of physical and mental fitness, or the way that when its men are thrown together in artificial conditions they forge strong friendships, the army was to be one of the three main formative influences on the young adult Ian Carr.
