Long hours and endless meetings kept me away from dealing with actual customers and helping people. There was also less time available to be home with my family. I found that I was feeling distant from my work, started losing my focus, and was taking short cuts instead of performing to the best of my ability. To better get a handle on my values, I decided to define a list of long-term goals and committed myself to restructuring my career so it contributed to my personal definition Knowing Oneself Truly 25 of success.

Mild forms of stress can act as a motivator and energizer. However, having too much stress damages our performance, and can lead to unhappiness, exhaustion, burnout, and serious illness. Four years ago, when I worked as assistant production manager in a textile manufacturing company, I was put under stress. It was caused by organizational and personal factors. It began when my company underwent downsizing, several staffs were laid off, and my workload was dramatically increased. To meet the deadlines, I had to cut back the lunchtime and work overtime.

Contrast that with my current situation, in which I not only love what I do, but I genuinely like the people I work with and they appear to both like and care about me as a person. Physiologically, these stresses have manifested themselves in much the same manner as is stated in the theory. During the period of high, negative stress, both my blood pressure and frequency of headaches and back pain were high, and each has been dramatically reduced since changing my work environment. Likewise, the psychological symptoms of stress have also followed the constructs of the theory, with significant increases in anxiety, irritability, and procrastination during the former period described and being nearly eliminated during the latter.
