The stable will be finished in a week and we shall be in that as soon as it is finished. I am negotiating the purchase of a house and shall be very pleased to have it for one seems to have no spare time, and the two or three miles backwards and forwards to town is too much. I have entered the names of the people we know occupying plots. Several more have been bought—30 or 40 —but only a few of the purchasers are on the land. Very little of the irrigation work has been completed and I doubt—according to information — if we shall get much of a crop in consequence this year.

I walked down to Wilmer in the afternoon and felt very hot and dusty when I arrived. I called at the Post Office, which is a little store where they sell groceries, and at the end of the shop there is a sort of rabbit-hutch (this is the Post Office). The man gave me three letters. I glanced at them eagerly. All for Captain Phillips, and official-looking documents at that, and my heart felt rather heavy. R. office, which is a little wooden house, painted white, with a green roof and a flight of steps leading up.

It is nice to have a board floor under our feet again instead of "dirt," as they call soil out here. It is a large roomy place made of peeled pine which looks like matchboarding at home. It has two windows which are only holes at present, and a wide door that is never shut day or night. I am being brought up in the fresh air entirely now! We have a wooden table made of lathes by the carpenter—while you wait, or about half an hour!
