Learning to cultivate one’s character and make ethical commitments to society became the central purpose of education in Chinese culture. The Chinese tradition of academies (shuyuan书院) is actually an ancient form of the liberal arts college which trained students through reading classics and integrating the learning of arts and sciences in an interpersonal and dialogical way. In the first half of the twentieth century, during the period of the Republic, Chinese universities were highly influenced by the USA and Germany.
