In the bigger colleges which offer a free, or virtually free, choice of subject combination there is a growing tendency for students to study those subjects in which they are most interested and have been most successful— regardless of whether they represent a recognised career path.

A small college in a rural part of Suffolk or Norfolk may have an enrolment of 800–900 full- and part-time day students, whereas large urban colleges have many thousands of students. The curriculum is also partly determined by the needs of local industry and commerce and the job opportunities they offer. Thus, although certain qualifications required by major industries and business occupations will be found in nearly all non-specialist colleges, the FE curriculum in a northern town that retains its heavy industry will obviously have a different emphasis to that of a college serving a west country holiday resort or a high-tech area in the south.

Between them these boards offer and examine nearly 400 syllabuses in more than 70 subjects, a range that reflects the diversity of the higher education courses for which they are primarily a preparation. The majority of A level subjects are in fact minority interests, the demand for which justifies only one board offering a syllabus. The bulk of the GCE examination boards’ work relates to a group of twelve subjects that account for 80 per cent of the A level candidature. In most of these subjects all the boards offer at least one syllabus and sometimes more than one.
