I did get a lot of comment. ’ ” As a historian, Leary knew this type of symbolic memorialization was intended to stigmatize him. He had grown accustomed to fellow whites’ sarcasm toward his role as one of the first bridges between white and black education. His buddies had teased him about his new job, “How do you eat in the cafeteria with all those blacks preparing your food? ” In replies to his friends’ critiques veiled in humor, Leary responds in jest by pointing out his friends’ faulty logic.

Yet unlike advocates of desegregation, Leary did not fear any violent repercussions, which others faced during the early moves toward desegregation. He never feared for his safety: “Oh! Never felt that! ” His stature made him an ideal candidate. As he recalls now, “Especially during that time period, it was a big decision of mine. ” The Sound of the Paddle Early in the fall semester of 1968, white history teacher Alex Leary felt he was beginning to know his black students and his new setting. But one day early in the fall semester of 1968 he had cause to doubt his understanding.

As a member of a long-standing white family, he moved freely throughout the county. He knows the territory and the white history of Camden like the back of his hand. Traveling on boats, evading water moccasins, Leary’s childhood adventures taught him not only survival, but also to be a better local historian. In 1965 after graduating from the all-white Camden High School in 1961 and segregated Eastern Carolina University, Leary returned to his family farmland in Old Trap to teach at Camden High School.
