Increasing the movement range might be a common aim of the two modalities, albeit for different reasons. While the physiotherapist focuses on physical health, the dance movement therapist regards physical wellbeing as a fair reflection of psychological health. The way such aims can be achieved is also different: the physiotherapist stresses increasing movement effort, while the dance movement therapist encourages the development of relevant imagery, symbolism and dance-like work as a means of achieving the same target.

This discussion will offer a first sketch of the boundaries of the field. We will then look at definitions of arts therapies given by official arts therapies sources. Our analyses of these definitions will enable us to identify important aspects of arts therapies and to suggest our own definition. Arts therapies and therapeutic arts As we discussed in Chapter 1, historically, movements such as ‘the arts for all’ and ‘the arts for health’ have contributed to the emergence of arts therapies. Community and hospital artists led these movements and created a type of work we broadly term ‘therapeutic arts’ (this type of work can also be found with the name ‘arts for health’).
